What live call traffic shows

The numbers below come from production traffic on Canarics client lines, measured at the carrier level and anonymized. Sample sizes are stated with each figure. We publish them because most missed-call statistics online are recycled estimates with no traceable source.

In a recent one-month window, a 22-person sales and service team received 4,398 inbound calls. 1,527 of them rang out with no answer. This was counted per call event in carrier records, not sampled or extrapolated. An AI line running beside the same team answered every call it received in the same period. A broader measurement across our instrumented client teams over 90 days puts the same figure at 30.3% (n = 12,984 inbound calls).

At one client, the AI receptionist handles 48.5% of all conversations from greeting to hang-up: bookings, order status, routine questions. The AI has only partial access to that client's internal systems, so this share is a floor, not a ceiling.

Across Canarics clients, evening and weekend conversations range from 8% to 29% of total volume. Service businesses sit at the top of that range. Without an always-on line, these calls simply ring out.

Across two instrumented client teams over 90 days, 3,939 inbound calls went unanswered. Most triggered real work: 80.7% were followed by a manual callback attempt within 24 hours, and when the connection was re-made, the median delay was 13 minutes. 30.2% of recoveries happened only because the caller tried again.

The rest, 13.4%, never reconnected at all. A missed call is two costs in one: staff time spent chasing the calls you recover, and the callers you never hear from again.

an engaged AI conversation runs as long as a human one

The median AI receptionist conversation where the caller spoke at least twice lasts 72 seconds. The median human call on the same lines over the same period lasts 59 seconds. The assumption that AI calls are ten-second gimmicks does not survive contact with production traffic.

One external figure we rely on

In our ROI math we assume that 85% of callers who reach no answer do not call back. That figure comes from BT Business research and is not our measurement. Everything above is.

Methodology, honestly

Canarics ingests call records at the carrier layer (LMT, Tele2, Bite, or a custom integration), so every call event is counted, including the ones nobody picked up. Counts are taken from carrier metadata; conversation outcomes are taken from AI-processed transcripts. Missed-call recovery is computed by matching events on the same team and phone number (normalized across international and local formats) within a 24-hour window. Client identities are never published. The samples are small and we say so: these are measurements of specific production deployments, not industry-wide surveys. As more client traffic accumulates, this page gets updated and the date below changes.
